There’s something about the look of a Lamborghini; sleek, sexy, powerful. Even if you don’t know much about cars, you can take one in at a glance and be impressed with the artful blend of form meets function.
But for those who do know about cars, the Lamborghini venture into the world of hybrids is raising some eyebrows. After all, the company is holding off on offering a fully-electric car, so their clean energy journey is lukewarm at best.
But Lamborghini wants to keep offering the style and performance brand-lovers covet, so they’re taking the transition slowly and making sure they get it right.
And never fear – the hybrids will maintain that recognizable out-of-this-world look.
Although many things are changing, the beloved and recognizable profile of a classic Lamborghini isn’t among them, according to design boss Mitja Borkert.
Autocar shares, “’We will always create cars with emotional performance,’ said Borkert, speaking to Autocar at the Milan Monza motor show. ‘They will always look like spaceships, always be inspiring, always cars that with whatever technology they have will have the sound and the emotion to touch you.’
‘We have a clear future declared by Stephan Winkelmann [Lamborghini CEO] and we are heading to the future. We finish with pure internal combustion this year and start hybrid next year.’”
Borkert explained that the evolution and clean energy turn was inevitable, but that it does more than help protect a healthier environment; it opens up some cool design options too.
Although Lamborghini is jumping into hybrids, it will be a little while before fully-electric Lambos hit the pavement.
Insider reports, “By 2024, it plans to overhaul its lineup with three plug-in hybrids: successors to the Aventador and Huracan supercars, along with a new version of the popular Urus SUV. If hybrids land somewhere between gas cars and electric vehicles, then plug-in hybrids — equipped with larger batteries, better fuel economy, and the capability to drive short distances under electric power only — are the midway point between a hybrid and a full EV.
Hybridization is crucial for making Lamborghini greener in a way that is ‘acceptable and digestible’ by markets and consumers, Winkelmann said. Marrying clean electric motors and big gas engines allows the company to appeal to two opposing factions of its customer base: the older, combustion-engine purists and the younger crowd, which places greater value on environmental responsibility.”
While the company is ready to make the switch and start producing more environment friendly cars, they’re also dedicated to the values of what it means to drive a Lamborghini and want to ensure they continue to provide customers with the beauty and performance they expect.
If you expect a loud, powerful Lamborghini – they want to make sure that’s exactly what you get.
So while the company is rocketing into the future with hybrid cars; they’ll be doing it with that signature spaceship look, feel – and power.
