The automotive world has seen a change in trend as all manufacturers have now incorporated electrification in their lineup. At the same time, most global manufacturers have also claimed to go all-electric by the end of the decade. While it is an easy task to come up with new electric vehicles for the future, the existing vehicles in the company’s lineup, which have heritage and history associated with them, also need some form of treatment. Furthermore, some cars mean a lot more to their manufacturers as they represent the entire hierarchy and legacy of the brand it is associated with.
One such vehicle happens to be the Hummer. This particular vehicle represents what the defense stands for, as it has been used in combat for a long time. After being used in the military for a long time, General Motor Company decided to make the Hummer a street-legal vehicle, and it has been loved by people ever since for its massive proportions and mammoth-like street presence.
For a long time, the Hummer has been a gasoline-powered vehicle that guzzles a lot of fuel thanks to its big engine. GMC has now decided to release an all-new Hummer, running on pure electric power. It was not a particularly easy task since the Hummer has always been a competent vehicle with a ‘go anywhere’ attitude. Finally, the automaker has created an all-electric Hummer with massive power and insane capabilities, but it comes at the cost of emissions.
The Lightning Fast Performance
The switch from a gasoline-powered engine to a battery setup was a big and powerful one. The current Hummer EV is powered by three electric motors with a combined power output of around 1000 HP. The three electric motors are mated to a battery which is mounted on the floor of the vehicle and has a capacity of 212 kWh.
All-wheel drive comes as standard, and the vehicle can do a 0 to 60 mph time of just 3.3 seconds, which puts it in supercar territory. The vehicle also gets a fair bit of gizmos like rear-wheel steering and a crab walk mode which allows exceptional low-speed maneuverability and would help a lot in tricky off-road situations. A very high power output like this enables the Hummer EV to also have an excellent towing capacity of 7500 LBS, but it falls short when compared to its competition from Ford and Rivian.
One of the most significant issues associated with electric vehicles is the ‘range anxiety’ they come with. The 2022 Hummer EV has a 329-mile driving range which would come down to around 290 in the real world. The vehicle uses an 800 V architecture which supports fast charging that would add nearly 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. The vehicle can also be charged at a regular charging station, but the charging speed would be significantly slower.
A Space-Age Design
The 2022 Hummer EV looks nothing short of a space-age vehicle since it has been completely modernized. It has some throwback design elements compared to the previous generation Hummer, but apart from that, every single panel on the vehicle is new. The previous generation Hummer was a ‘military-grade vehicle’, but the 2022 Hummer EV takes a different approach being a ‘crew cab’ as it has a 5-foot-long bed at the back.
The vehicle’s roof can be removed entirely as it has four detachable panels that can be stored in the front cargo compartment. Only the level of quality has been significantly improved from its predecessor. The biggest highlight of the interior is the giant screens with excellent resolution and Touch Response. In addition, there is the large 13.4-inch display which serves as the central infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch display that serves as a digital driver’s gauge.
General Motor Company has worked with Epic games, which was the creator of the famous video game fortnight, to make the graphics for the Hummer EV. A host of features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are provided as standard and can be operated wirelessly. Even in terms of safety, the vehicle now gets autonomous emergency braking along with pedestrian detection. Lane departure warning and lane keep assist come as standard too. Lastly, it also packs hands-free driving and adaptive cruise control.
The Worrisome Emissions
While the whole purpose of electric vehicles is to cut down on emissions to have a better future for the planet, the 2022 Hummer EV falls short of this claim. Several reports suggest that the Hummer EV creates more emissions than a gasoline-powered sedan. It emits 21 grams of carbon dioxide per mile, more than a Chevrolet Malibu, which happens to be a compact economy sedan.
To put things into perspective, when compared to a small electric hatchback like a Chevrolet Malibu, which emits roughly 91 grams of carbon dioxide per mile, the Hummer EV emits 341 grams of carbon dioxide per mile. The General Motor Company has claimed that they are working to fix this issue, but it does raise a big question of whether electric vehicles are actually that efficient or better for the planet.
